When people hear about violence in schools, many immediately think about particularly insidious examples involving mass violence from active shooters. While this particular form of violence is a real threat and an ongoing problem within the United States, it’s also far from the most common form of school violence. SSOCS data shows that 71% of schools reported at least one incident of a violent crime on their premises, with only a fraction involving acts of mass violence. Much more common are instances of bullying and cyberbullying, fights, threats, hate speech, and more.
